 Spring Term 2026

This term, our Year 5/6 children will be exploring the topic 'Africa Is Not a Country', with Geography as the host subject. Through this unit, pupils will develop a deeper understanding of Africa as a vast and diverse continent made up of many different countries, cultures and landscapes.

Using their geographical skills, children will investigate where African countries are located, explore physical and human features, and consider how geography shapes daily life. Learning will be enriched through links with English, History, Art and Design Technology.

We will also have a whole school focus on 'Reading for Pleasure'.

 Homework

Homework will be handed out every week on a Friday and due back on the Thursday of the following week.

Reading

In the first two weeks of term, all children will be given a colour banded reading book to take home and read. Children can also bring in their own books from home. Reading at home is encouraged at least three times a week but ideally every day. Please ensure that any reading is recorded in their Home School Planner which will be coming home with their reading book.

Spellings

Our spelling scheme looks at teaching spellings through phonics.  The scheme introduces a clear and systematic view for teaching spellings that will provide our children with life-long strategies. We will be teaching the weekly spellings in school, and will send these home for the children to further practise and consolidate at home.

Maths

An Arithmetic quiz will be sent home weekly for children to complete independently. We will be encouraging children to access Times Table Rockstars at home as well as in school.

 General Information

  •  Please ensure that your child's uniform, coat, pack up and water bottle are clearly labelled.
  • Children will be given a banded reading book as a home reader, unless they have indicated to us that they are currently reading another suitable book at home.
  • Named water bottles should be in school daily and must be taken home daily for washing.
  • This term, the children will be developing their gymnastics skills. Please ensure your child comes to school in FULL PE kit on Monday (5/6S), Tuesday (5/6P) and Wednesday (5/6CW). This includes shorts/leggings, white top, trainers and socks. As the weather changes, the children will still have PE outside, whenever possible, so they may require joggers and a hoody/jumper. No football kits please.

  • Please note: we are a NUT FREE SCHOOL, so children cannot bring any nut products to school in their pack ups. We appreciate your co-operation with this.
  • Please bring healthy snacks and these cannot be shared with other children.
